Music Therapy and the Art of Self-Care: Asian Mental Health Collective Roundtable Series

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

  • How is music utilized in a therapeutic setting?

  • How does music affect us?

  • What are some ways we can utilize music in our own self-care?

  • How does our self identity affect us?

On June 20th, I was honored to be a guest speaker for a weekly roundtable hosted by Asian Mental Health Collective along with fellow music therapists Mai Abe, MT-BC of Rubato Music Therapy. The roundtable was hosted on Zoom and live-streamed on Facebook.

During the first hour, we touched on topics including what music therapy is, how and why we chose this field, how we utilize music in our own self-care, and how our cultural identities have influenced the way we practice.

During the second hour, the participants had the opportunity to engage in two experiential interventions with Mia and I separately in two breakout rooms. I demonstrated how to use songwriting as a self-care practice.

Due to the time limits, we could not answer all the questions from the audience. However, there were some thought-provoking questions from the audience that I would not want to miss. Therefore, I am planning to create a series of videos and blog posts to answer the questions received during the roundtable.

If you are curious about these questions and my response to them, please subscribe to my newsletter AND my Youtube Channel to receive updates when the videos/blogs are released.
