The Mentality of "Othering"

Background of this blog:

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement just announced a new policy today, indicating that F1 and M1 visa holders (visas for international students) whose schools switch to online courses are required to leave the country or may face immigration consequences, including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings.

Combined with a series of new policies around immigration, is it United States' intention to force non-citizens either to leave the country or become illegals?

  • Do you know that there are no flights to go home for many foreigners in the U.S. due to the pandemic while the new policies are forcing people with valid status to either leave the country or mark them as illegal?

Rather than attacking the COVID-19 virus, the U.S. seems to be more interested in grouping people with various tags and creating "legit reasons" to attack our fellow human beings.

Apparently, some people believe that they are entitled to do the same with fellow human beings.

What do you think?

It seems that the policymakers come from a place where they do not care about anyone who is "different" than them and/or as long as their PERSONAL interest is not affected. Unfortunately, it is rooted in U.S. history to treat "the other" with cruelty.

What is worse with this mentality is that once "the other" is eliminated, another group of "the other" will be created under a different name or characteristic. Looking at the wars and conflicts in human history and decoding the cause of them, this mentality is one of the major seeds (the internal factors).

This mentality and pattern need to change, otherwise, our world will continue to suffer from them.

I feel it is important to speak out on this topic from a psychological perspective and point out that our individual mental health is closely tied with the social and political environment. Hence, making positive changes to the social and political environment in your own small ways is contributing to improving our collective mental health.

Here we go my original song as we reflect on this trend of thoughts.

"COVID-19 is a PH test of humanity"
